When the law enforcement officer went on this call............. he considered
his care "adequate". However, when it was called into the rescue
it was an emergency! Thanks to Rick for doing the preliminaries on this
one! We were able to get the horse donated to the rescue and then the real
work
began. Not only is this gentle soul malnourished, he has also been severely
foundered and has had no hoof care or vaccinations in some time. He was hypothermic upon examination -
his rectal temperature was 95.0 - he was in shock and in gastro distress -
we had to get him up and moving if he was
going to make it! The next problem was getting him out of the barn -
you see, Apache could not walk, but with the help of 4 caring volunteers he was
able to hop to the trailer. Once in the trailer he showed us the extent of
the damage done since he had been down so long. His urine had a very high
content of blood and his penis was sideways in his sheath. After medication
and fluid replacement he was able to
complete the 2 hour journey standing in the trailer and was bright eyed and
alert - not sure what was next. He has received an enormous amount of
medical attention and is eating with gusto! I saw him for the first time
today and could not believe the life that he shows! This boy wants to
LIVE!!! He has a heart of gold and bears no ill against anyone. We
can only hope and pray that he will make a complete recovery, we do not
yet know the extent of his hoof problems.
Why?? Why did this happen? This happened in Huntington County, where
no one could get anything done - no arrest, no charges filed, nothing. Is
this what we want our animals to go through - this horse was not in any danger
of going to slaughter - he was going to starve and freeze to death, yet his
owner cried and said "my pretty horse" There was nothing pretty
about this horse.
PLEASE! We must all band
together! We must stop this inhumane treatment that is allowed by owners
and law enforcement.
